Extension of “Forensic Status” Applications – 10 years on

The NSW Bar Association’s Human Rights Committee is pleased to invite you to attend a seminar on the ‘Extension of “Forensic Status” Applications 10 years on…’, at 5pm on Wednesday, 10 July 2024. The seminar will be held online via Zoom webinar.

The seminar has been organised to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the commencement of the Mental Health (Forensic Provisions) Amendment Act 2013 (NSW) which introduced the ‘extension of status as a forensic patient’ provisions that now appear in Part 6 of the Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment Forensic Provisions Act 2020 (NSW). The seminar will provide a timely opportunity for practitioners to reflect on the lessons learnt to date, from both a legal and clinical management perspective. It is intended that the seminar will also address human rights issues that arise in the context of extension orders, including risk of arbitrary detention, the rights of people with disabilities, privacy of personal and health information, and use of risk-assessment tools.

The Honourable Geoffrey Bellew SC will chair the seminar and the speakers will be Dr Andrew Ellis, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist & Clinical Director and Medical Superintendent of The Forensic Hospital in Sydney, and Dr Kerri Eagle, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Clinical Director of the Community Forensic Mental Health Service.

Please note: Only NSW barristers or members of the NSW Bar Association can register for CPD’s or webinars.

Please provide any written questions in advance to cpd@nswbar.asn.au.
